Rough Day

Yesterday was an all around tough day.  First work was hectic and non stop meetings which led to a quick late lunch which didn't tie in well to my run.  I had hoped to get in 4-4.5 instead of the schedule 3.5 to make up some for missing Sundays run.  As I started running I knew this wasn't going to be a good idea.  I felt sick to my stomach the entire run but I did manage to get in 3.6 miles in 37 mins.  Today is typically cross training or 2 miles but I'm going to get in the 4-4.5 miles I was thinking about doing yesterday to make sure I stay on track with the running being that yesterday was my first run in 3 days.

  1. You're doing amazing. I can't come anywhere close to the distances and times you're running.

What advice do you have for running shoes for fat guys? I need a new pair and nothing I've had in the past few years have been quite up to snuff.

    BTW I'm in Minneapolis too!

  2. Well I had tried to start a few years back and had gotten a pair of Brooks shoes then. They were motion stability as thats what they assume all big people need, and I only put about 20 miles on them before I quit. I started again using those shoes but I knew there had to be something better they just didn't feel right. I went to a place called Startline near Ridgedale mall and brought my old shoes. The guy said the cushioning was completely gone as it goes away after a year or two of just sitting even if you don't run on them. Also he could tell by the wear pattern on them that I was a neutral shoe because the wear was on the outside and motion stability tries to move you from the inside more toward the middle, it was moving me from the middle to the outside. He gave me a pair of good cushioned neutral shoes, Asics Nimbus 12, and they felt really good and still do. The big thing about that store that I liked is they watched me run around a bit and then tried on the shoes and watched me run and gave an educated opinion, not just a blind guess. Hope that helps.

As for my times, that pace is just kind of where my body settles in at. If I run much slower than that it really feels like I'm pounding on every step and much faster my lungs can't keep up. One thing I changed from my past running attempts and early this time is I shortened my stride to more of what feels like a shuffle (ie not picking my feet way up behind me) and increase my cadence. I end up with more steps but its easier on my legs. The distance has taken building. I started running a mile then walking then run a mile, etc. I slowly built up how long I could run without walking from 8 mins, to 12 mins, to 16 mins, you get the idea. I'm still building it because I decided to do the Hal Higdon half marathon training and this Sunday I have a new long distance of 5 miles coming up.

I've read your blog and saw you were in Minneapolis so you feel my pain on the weather and finally getting outside is great.

My problem is I have stalled in weight loss the last month and you've dropped a lot since you started and maintained it well, any advice?
